Chapter Ten

When Megan pulled her car in the driveway beside Andy’s she noticed a woman carrying a baby standing on the doorstep. She’d seen her around the neighborhood a few times.

The baby started to cry and Megan saw Andy dart into the house via the garage service entry door. Megan opted to go inside via the front door so she could say hi to their neighbor.

“So glad I caught you,” said the woman rocking the baby but it continued to cry so Megan reached out and rubbed the back of its hand. “I’m Becky from across the street.”

“Hi Becky, I’m Megan.”

“Just wondering if you and the man who won the house would like to come to our neighborhood get-together on Saturday. It’s at our house, the one over there with the green door.”

“I don’t know what Andy’s plans are but I’ll be sure to stop by.”

“Great. Oh, and before I forget, I brought you these as a housewarming gift.”

She walked to the front step and picked up a plate of what looked like chocolate chip cookies. Megan took them from her.

“Thank you.”

The baby screamed again. “It’s close to his bedtime so I should be going. See you on Saturday around seven.”

Megan waved to the baby and then opened the front door and went inside. She checked the mail before going to find Andy. She couldn’t see him anywhere so decided to go upstairs. She noticed his bedroom door was closed. That was strange.

Megan tapped on it. “Andy, you in there?”

“Yes, I felt tired all of a sudden. I’ve left the food in the fridge. I’ll have some later if I feel like it.”

Megan frowned. If she wasn’t mistaken he sounded nasally like he’d been crying or something.

“That was Becky who lives across the street. She invited us to the neighborhood get together at her place, Saturday at seven.”

“I’m not sure about that right now.”

Megan rested her forehead against the door panel, hoping Andy didn’t suddenly open it, pitching her into his room.

Something was up with him and it had happened the minute they’d arrived back at the house. On the way home had he thought about them hugging in the parking lot? Maybe he’d decided how stupid it was for two roommates to get involved sexually. Perhaps he was embarrassed and shutting himself away to put some distance between them so nothing else happened.

“I’ll let you get some sleep then.”

“Good night.”

“Night, sweet dreams.”

Andy heard Megan’s footsteps going away from his door. He hadn’t intended to offend her. That was the last thing he ever wanted to do. The night had been somewhat magical, and for the last few hours he’d felt like a teenager in high school finally going on a date with the prettiest girl in the class.

But everything had taken a nosedive when he’d seen the neighbor standing on the door step as he’d turned into the driveway. Not that he had anything against her. She’d often waved to him some mornings when he’d been backing out to go to work.
